Benissa covers a large area of 69 square kms in the Marina Alta and offers a cosy old town, then inland the Sierra de Bernia mountains and a coastal strip of some 4 kms running between Calpe and Moraira. The stunning coastline has numerous coves and beaches to explore. Benissa is very central to the Marina Alta, so you are between the mountains and the coast and most towns or attractions are within a 20 – 40 mins drive!
The old town, dating back to the middle ages, has a beautiful central square with fountains and is situated around the largest church, initially built in honour to Saint Peter and then shared with the "Puríssima Xiqueta" (the Purest Little Mary), which is a little neogothic cathedral which was built by the villagers and it is locally known as "La Catedral de La Marina". Benissa hosts an incredible market every Saturday and is famous for its festivals celebrating the virgin and the patron saint.
In middle January Benissa offers a children's fair with attractions and the last weekend in January there is a large medieval fair, which is a sight to behold! Starting on the 4th weekend in April, the town hosts the Coronation of the Fiesta's Queen together with other events including a Procession, kids entertainment, bull fighting, music concerts, and an incredible fireworks display! The Moors and Christians festival is at the end of June, which includes parades and battle re-enactments.
